About Paul Gillen

Paul Gillen is a Partner in the employment & pensions team at Pinsent Masons LLP. Beginning his career in Human Resource Management, he spent more than 10 years working in a variety of HR roles including retail, construction, civil engineering, manufacturing and distribution.  More recently Paul was Head of HR for a diverse international group of construction, engineering and manufacturing companies.  

Paul is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and is currently vice chair to the Northern Ireland Branch Committee. Paul is a member of the CBI Employment and Skills committee and a Visiting Professor to the School of Law at the Univaersity of Ulster.

He trained with Bevan Brittan LLP before joining Pinsent Masons LLP, originally in the Edinburgh office before transferring to Belfast.  

With a practical background in commercial HR Management Paul works with clients ensuring a commercial, practical and solutions focused approach.  Paul advises clients on contentious matters, including in Industrial and Fair Employment Tribunals, and non-contentious matters including employment aspects of PFI/PPP, insolvency, TUPE and mergers and acquisitions as well as HR support including advising on policy and procedure.  Paul has worked with a range of clients including small business traders to large multi-nationals.  

Paul has been admitted to the Law Society in Northern Ireland, England & Wales and the Republic of Ireland. 

Recent Successes:

  • advising on the TUPE and other employment aspects of a multi jurisdictional acquisition of a molasses trading and bulk liquid storage business.
  • acting for a joint venture business on a PFI/PPP project for the outsourcing of IT and other facilities management from a public sector body.
  • providing a management toolkit for a large construction client on dealing with collective redundancies.
  • providing advice to businesses on changes to legislation and good practice ensuring compliance and preventing disputes.
  • case management of contentious matters, including acting for a large retailer on a range of cases including unfair dismissal, discrimination and contractual disputes.
