Why is neurodiversity awareness training important?
Neurodiversity refers to the natural variations in how human brains function and process information. Although the term neurodiversity technically includes both neurodivergent and neurotypical thinkers, it is commonly associated with certain conditions or neuro differences such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others.
All-staff neurodiversity awareness training is important because every workplace interaction involves individuals with different cognitive and behavioural traits. However, many organisations still underestimate the importance of neuroinclusion.
Raising awareness of neurodiversity allows organisations to fully harness the strengths of their diverse workforce, promoting understanding, reducing stigma, and ensuring equal opportunities for all employees. For example:
- Autism can be a lack of eye contact
- But it can also be noticing patterns nobody else has seen
- ADHD can be chaotic
- But it can also be hyperfocus and getting twice as much done as everybody else
- Dyslexia can be spelling mistakes
- But it can also be concepts, ideas, and a viewpoint you hadn’t previously considered
By offering this training, organisations can unlock the full potential of every individual and cultivate a thriving, inclusive workplace where everyone can succeed.
Who needs neurodiversity awareness training?
Neurodiversity awareness training is essential for all staff, regardless of their role, as it influences every workplace interaction. According to CIPD’s Neuroinclusion at Work Report 2024, an estimated 1 in 5 people in the UK identify as neurodivergent. However, only half of employees surveyed said their organisation has an open and supportive climate where employees can talk about neurodiversity.
In their report CIPD explain: “The value of neurodiversity awareness training across an organisation should not be underestimated as it can help develop a general awareness, understanding and appreciation of colleagues.
“Through suitable training, employees can become comfortable talking about neurodiversity. Establishing a basic etiquette will help put neurodivergent employees at ease, while also allowing management and colleagues to approach issues without fear of getting it wrong.”
Providing all-staff training ensures that employees at all levels understand neurodiversity, fostering a culture where differences are valued and supported.
How long does this neurodiversity awareness training take?
The course will take no longer than 45 minutes to complete including an assessment. Each member of staff will receive their own personalised certificate upon successful completion.
