Diversity & Inclusion - The Importance of Conscious Inclusion

About this course

Whilst we continue to progress towards a society that is more inclusive and fair for all, recent events such as differing opinions on Covid vaccination status, Climate change, the Black Lives Matter and #Metoo movements and the war in Ukraine have forced us all to focus and reflect on issues relevant to diversity and inclusion like never before.

Legal Island’s latest eLearning course developed in 2022 is unique. “Diversity & Inclusion - The Importance of Conscious Inclusion” provides the legal compliance training every employer needs to help defend against litigation. At the same time, it helps every employee understand the importance of inclusive behaviour in the workplace and the value it brings to employees and your organisation.

The highly interactive course helps the user to develop inclusive thinking and behaviours whilst considering case studies based around such topical issues as Black Lives Matter, the #Metoo movement, Covid and the war in Ukraine. We believe it to be the most up-to-date and topical compliance training available in the UK today.

What is conscious inclusion?

Conscious inclusion is about being aware of your biases and doing your best to make everyone feel included. It is a relatively new term in the world of diversity and inclusion and it is sometimes used in conjunction with unconscious (or implicit) bias.

What is diversity and inclusion?

Diversity is understanding, accepting, and valuing differences between people within the workplace, including those of different races, ethnicities, genders, ages, religions, disabilities, and sexual orientations, and with that, differences in education, personalities, skill sets and experiences. Inclusion is a collaborative, supportive, and respectful workplace environment where everyone feels they can participate and achieve their potential.

Why is diversity & inclusion training important?

Top employment lawyers advise it is essential to provide all staff with diversity and inclusion training on, or before the employment commences. Employers that fail to do this leave themselves very exposed to tribunal claims.

Many of the UK's most successful organisations now champion the importance of equality and diversity in the workplace. Numerous studies point to the connection between high returns and greater workplace diversity.

Diversity and Inclusion training helps staff raise awareness of the value of collaborating with people of different cultures, races, genders, ethnicities, beliefs, experiences and ideas.

Training all staff within this topic area can also boost business performance, reduce the likelihood of harassment issues at work and strengthen an employer’s defence in Industrial Tribunal cases.

A recent survey 'Sexual harassment of LGBT people in the workplace' by TUC, released in May 2019, found that nearly 7 in 10 (68%) of LGBT people have been sexually harassed at work.

Who needs diversity & inclusion training?

Advice from top employment lawyers is that diversity and inclusion training is completed on day one of employment and then refreshed regularly to ensure all staff are aware of the value of collaborating with people of different cultures, races, genders, ethnicities, beliefs, experiences and ideas and their roles and responsibilities in keeping the workplace harassment-free.

How long does this Diversity & Inclusion training take?

This online training course will take no longer than 60 minutes to complete including an assessment. Each member of staff will receive their own personalised certificate upon successful completion.
