Why is workplace health and safety training important?
Good health and safety practices in the workplace are essential in the prevention of injuries and ill health. Unsafe conditions and unsafe behaviours may lead to personal harm and they will have an adverse effect on the business as a whole.
The impact of an accident on an organisation includes:
- The cost of an accident investigation can be expensive
- Prosecutions
- Fines
- Imprisonment
- Costs to recruit temporary staff
- Bad publicity
Workplace ill health is estimated to be costing the Northern Ireland economy over £238 million per year. (Source: Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland).
Who needs health and safety training within the workplace?
To reduce the likelihood of injuries and ill health within the workplace, it is good practice to provide all staff with health and safety training on, or shortly after starting employment with regular refresher updates throughout their employment.
The purpose of the course is to provide an overview of common health and safety issues. An employer is primarily responsible for managing health and safety, but all employees have a duty to take care of their own health and safety and that of anyone who could be affected by what they do at work.
It is vital employees have an understanding of their responsibilities under health and safety law and the dangers which may be present in the workplace.
According to the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland, 19 workers were killed in work-related accidents in Northern Ireland and 239 workers sustained major injuries between 2021 and 2022.
How long does this Health and Safety training take?
The course will take no longer than 45 minutes to complete including an assessment. Each member of staff will receive their own personalised certificate upon successful completion.
