Can an employer contact an employee whilst they are signed-off sick by a doctor?
Posted in : First Tuesday Q&A NI on 7 November 2017 Issues covered:Employers are able to maintain a reasonable amount of contact with an employee who is off on sick leave. This is generally considered best practice for an employer. This contact can be used to obtain regular updates on the employee's recovery and prognosis, and to keep the employee up to date with what is going on in the workplace. Employees are often understandably anxious about returning to work after a long absence, and therefore may find it reassuring that an employer has given some thought to their return to work when they are able.
However, employers should not be contacting employees in order to put pressure on them to return before they are well enough to do so, or overwhelm them
