Can probation extend beyond 12 months?

Broadly, they are an initial trial period during which an employer will assess the suitability of an employee for their positon. They will generally be set for an initial period defined in the contract and the terms of each probationary period will be governed by the applicable terms of that contract.
Where the initial period of probation is less than twelve months and an employer wishes to extend this, reference should be made to this right of extension in the contract of employment from the outset. Whether an employer may extend this timeframe will depend upon whether this right has been reserved in the original
